The proposed project for the recovery of Carrara’s former Ferrovia Marmifera (Marble Railway) retraces the traces of the ‘marble route’ that led from the quarries through the railway line to the city centre and then continued its path towards the marina and the various processing sites. The new declination of this route as a bicycle and pedestrian path tells of the re-establishment of a connection in the territory, which was interrupted for years and which would now allow the ‘marble journey’ to be revived, no longer by train, but by slow mobility that would guarantee the possibility of better knowing and promoting the beauty and identity of these places. There are three main ‘stations’: S. Martino, Avenza and the one at the mouth of the Carrione, each of which is distinguished by a new design of the open space transformed into squares or equipped parks and by the possible recovery of some disused buildings, with the attribution of new functions, on the basis of its intrinsic and historical characteristics.
